Poetry was the second language that I became fluent In

A Passion Inspired By Loss

Growing up, poetry was oftentimes just another subject that we learned about year to year in school—an unavoidable block of time in my elementary class schedule. It wasn’t until the passing of my grandmother that my eyes were truly opened to the infinite possibilities welcomed within the rhymes and stanzas of poetry. I remember this day vividly. As I was sitting next to my friend Noah outside of my 5th-grade classroom at East Lake Elementary, I picked up my pencil, grasped my red notebook tight within my hand, and let the lead tip dance freely between each line of the white sheet that lay before me. That was the day I wrote my first poem, A Rigid Soul, in honor of the sweet soul that is my grandma, Edeline Jean.

For it knew that it was the only word worthy enough to describe you.

It kills me that we have now killed the once-ever-protected childhood innocence.

And in this great crime, I’ve realized, that there are no innocents.

“Jeremiah is a rare and valuable voice for this generation. His poetry exposes the complexity of personal and cultural convulsions, without succumbing to the typical tools of young manhood. Rather than rage, Jeremiah leads with the curiosity and vulnerability that are truly the balm for our age.
